Nyaribari Masaba MP Daniel Manduku has announced that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is proposing National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed to replace Kitule Kindiki as Minister of Interior.
The announcement was made during a panel discussion on K24 TV, where Manduku appeared alongside Kiambu Senator Kalungo wa Tangwa. The proposal comes as Kindiki is expected to resign from his post at the Interior Ministry after he was recently approved by parliament as the next vice president. In response to a question about increasing ODM’s ministerial representation, Manduku confirmed Mohamed’s nomination, stressing that the final decision rests with President William Ruto.
“Yes, we have put the name Junet Mohamed to the front. We have just put the name to the front, but it is up to the president to decide,” Manduku said during the broadcast.
He also suggested that Kindiki may have already submitted his resignation to President Ruto, noting that such matters are often kept private. Parliament’s recent approval of Kindiki’s nomination as vice president marked an important step in the process, with 236 MPs voting in favor of his appointment. Chairman Moses Wetangula announced the unanimous decision, saying there was an “overwhelming majority of votes in favor”, with no votes against or abstentions recorded.
If Mohammed is appointed, he will work in President Ruto’s administration, including Hassan Joho in the mining sector, Opiyo Wandei in the energy sector, John Mbadi in the finance sector and Wycliffe Oparanya in the cooperative and MSME development sector. He will join a growing list of ODM employees. This potential appointment would further strengthen ODM’s presence in the cabinet, reflecting the party’s growing cooperation with the current government.
ODM’s support for President Ruto’s policies and agenda has since led to important appointments of party members. This collaboration has proven to be beneficial for both parties, with ODM gaining an influential position while supporting government initiatives.
Mr Mohamed currently serves as both Parliamentary Minority Leader and Suna East MP and will bring considerable political experience to the Ministry of Interior if appointed.
