This year, the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham’s Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services, founded by Hoover resident Ken Jackson, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to companion animals such as dogs, cats and horses in St. Louis, Shelby and Jefferson. will receive a grant of $69,200. Clare, Blount and Walker Counties.
The 11 organizations awarded grants this year are:
Kitty Kat Haven will donate $10,000 to help with veterinary costs for the hundreds of cats and kittens Haven treats each year, including critically ill and injured animals. KatDadde, $10,000. We support the comprehensive care of rescued and outdoor colony cats and strengthen our ability to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome cats. $10,000 to Spay/Neuter of Alabama, Remy SNIP Program. We provide low-cost spay/neuter services and reduce the number of unwanted animals in our communities. Walker County Humane Society, $10,000 to provide spay/neuter resources for Walker County. Bama Bully Rescue, $7,500. We provide bully breed care and adoption services and support community dogs owned by low-income owners. $5,000 to Hand in Paw, Inc., Wags for Wellness program. A mental health and stress reduction program that benefits healthcare workers and first responders. Sugar Bell Foundation, $5,000. We further our mission of connecting pets and people by providing comprehensive medical care, safe shelter, training/evaluation, and spay/neuter services to pet owners in need. Specialized Equestrian Services, which provides comprehensive care for horses in an animal-assisted equine therapy program, $4,700. Country Cattery will donate $2,500 to support veterinary costs, housing and food costs for the animals in captivity, and feeding the wild colony. Rescuers United for Furbabies, $2,500 to purchase a new air conditioning unit for the organization’s transport van. $2,000 to Birmingham AIDS Outreach, Pets Are Wonderful Support program. Provide meals and services to pets of people living with HIV who need financial assistance.
The Remy Fund was established by Mr. Jackson in 2010 in memory of his late dog Remy, and Mr. Jackson has donated more than $750,000 to the fund. Since 2011, the foundation has awarded more than $649,000 in grants.
As an endowment fund, the Remy Fund for Pets and Animal Services will continue to make grants each year to nonprofit organizations that serve dogs, cats, horses, and the people who love them.
The Remy Fund is supported by many generous donors, including generous gifts from the Diane and Warren Ferguson Animal Fund, the Jean K. Forman Animal Welfare Fund, and the Ann Knight Townsend Animal Welfare Fund.
The Remy Foundation Grants Committee thoroughly reviews all grant applicants, including on-site visits to applicants. Members of the Remy Foundation Grants Committee include Debra Linton (chair), Kathy Adams, Bert Gaddis, Cheryl Kimmerling, James “Murphy” Lynch, Maggie McDonald, Isabel Rubio, Cameron Vowell, Includes Laura Wainwright. Mr. Jackson serves as an ex-officio member of the committee.
