Los Angeles City Council candidate Isabel Jurado, who has made secretly recorded comments by incumbent Kevin de Leon a campaign issue, is on the defensive over her own privately recorded comments.
After hearing a candidate in the 14th Ward Congressional District say the F-word while discussing police, some residents of the district gathered in Highland Park to ask the candidate to leave the race. demanded their withdrawal.
“What we need is to defund the police, not the police. We need to support the police,” said Eddie Santillan of El Sereno.
The Westside Current newspaper first reported that during a conversation with students at California State University, Los Angeles, Jurado used a derogatory term when answering a question about the LAPD’s budget.
Jurado’s comments are now part of a new digital campaign against her by the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the police union.
Dan Schnur, who teaches political communication at the University of Southern California and the University of California, Berkeley, said this was October’s biggest surprise in the Los Angeles election, with Democrats trying to fend off recall attempts and keep their seats.・For Leon, it may be a political gift.
Polls show that more than any other group, Latino voters support efforts to strengthen public safety, such as Proposition 36, which calls for tougher penalties for theft and drug use.
“It is becoming increasingly clear that the people most concerned about violent crime are those who are most at risk of becoming victims of violent crime,” Schnurr said.
Mr. Jurado, who has the backing of the Democratic Socialist Party of America, aims to cut the police budget while opposing Mayor Bass’ efforts to restore LAPD staffing levels to previous levels.
At one point, Jurado admitted that he had signed the Democratic Socialists of America pledge calling for the abolition of the LAPD.
In response to recent criticism, Jurado said she was simply repeating the lyrics of a rap song that is part of a larger conversation about systemic injustice and police accountability, and that her campaign is not a distraction. He added that it will bring results.
