Seth Meyers talked about his experience with the “gentle parenting” style.
The 50-year-old father of three joined co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager on the Today show to discuss his new special, “Dad Man Walking.” In the stand-up special, which premieres October 26 on HBO and Max, Meyers gets candid about his parenting philosophy and his marriage to wife Alexi Ashe, 41.
The couple, who married in 2013, have three children, sons Ash, 8, and Axel, 5, and daughter Adelaide, 2.
When asked how she raises her children, Myers confessed that she is different from her father, Lawrence. Lawrence was described as a “dropping the hammer”, or strict parent.
“Every time I ‘drop the hammer,’ my kids think it’s funny,” he admitted, before explaining how he was “afraid” of his father.

“The other day I was driving and my kid was sitting in the back seat with a friend and I was getting frustrated and my son said to his friend, ‘Oh, I want this. Look, your dad’s about to lose it. Hilarious.’
Myers isn’t scary at all for kids. In fact, the Saturday Night Live alum believed it’s because we’re in a “different era” of parenting. In that era, it is abnormal for children to fear the aggressive authority of their parents.
Although he’s not a father who “drops the hammer,” the late-night show host went on to explain that he hasn’t always succeeded in being a “gentle” father either.
“My gentle parenting doesn’t get me anywhere,” he said, noting that his gentle parenting techniques received “high praise” from his children.

Myers also revealed that he and his wife have been giving their children “strikes,” or warnings. However, the couple has not yet decided on a firm punishment, instead coming up with “soft consequences” for too many strikes.
“I think they’re good kids, but I’m probably not a great parent,” Meyers joked.
Elsewhere during his Today appearance, the comedian revealed that his wife of 11 years has “veto power” over stand-up material on his show, especially when it involves her. Ash also helps her husband improve his commentary by adding “tags” to his jokes to make them funnier.
Myers and Ash first met in 2008 at fellow comedian Chris Kattan’s wedding. By 2013, the two were engaged and married the same year.
Three years after their marriage, the couple gave birth to their first son, Ash, two weeks ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, Axl was given birth in the lobby of her apartment building. When Ash found out she was pregnant with her third child, Adelaide, the couple decided to plan a home birth to avoid any surprises.
