No matter how great your child’s Halloween costume is, there’s a chance they’ll never wear it again. Whether it’s because costumes go out of fashion, children’s interests change, or simply because they’ve outgrown them, parents are reluctant to spend excessive amounts of money on disposable costumes during a cost of living crisis. I started avoiding it.
Instead, they create their own custom ensembles at home, which are not only affordable, but also extremely easy to make. Content creator Annie Nguyen (@anniesbucketlist) went viral on TikTok this week after sharing a video explaining how she created an iconic Halloween costume for herself and her son using Kmart items. Ta.
She said she only spent a total of $35 on the sushi rolls and a bottle of soy sauce to make the costumes for the mother-son duo.

Annie said she bought a children’s black t-shirt and a women’s black t-shirt for $2 each, as well as $1 stick glue, $2 sticky glue and an $8 hot glue gun. . She also spent $2.75 on a large piece of cardboard and $17 on a 60-sheet pack of textured cardstock paper, which was her biggest expense.
To make the sushi rolls, she drew large circles on cardboard and attached pieces of colored cardstock paper to resemble different sushi ingredients. Next, I packed the peanuts I had at home as rice and pasted them on cardboard. My son was also able to help with that before using a hot glue gun to attach it to the shirt.
For the soy sauce costume, Annie used cardboard to cut out black and yellow letters, used a hot glue gun to attach them to the shirt, and let them dry overnight. I then stapled pieces of red cardstock paper together to make the hat and complete the look.

Annie’s advice
Annie told Yahoo Lifestyle that the DIY sushi costume took “less than two hours” to trace, color, cut and glue, with everything drying overnight.
“You don’t have to spend a lot of money on Halloween costumes, especially if your kids will outgrow their costumes by the time the next Halloween comes around,” she says. “This means you can use simple items like craft glue and cardboard to create something that will work for the day, but may not last forever.”
She says she doesn’t do many DIY projects, but the costume was so easy that anyone could pull it off.
“If I can do it, anyone can,” she says. “I don’t do much DIY, but my son wanted to be a sushi chef, so I wanted to match him with soy sauce without spending money on a costume he would only wear once.This DIY is super easy and quick. He loved the costume!”
“The best costume combination ever”
Annie’s video has already been viewed more than 100,000 times, with many comments from fans praising her “adorable” outfit.
“This is the best costume combination ever!” one person wrote, while another wrote, “This is probably the cutest duo costume ever, mom, you did it!”
“Well done! You both look amazing,” a third person replied, followed by another commenting, “Great job making this costume!”
