Autumn is a very special time for holidays. It’s sweet, warm, and incredibly romantic. Of course, there are some typical fall travel destinations, such as Kyoto in Japan and Tuscany in Italy. But what about the less common variations? There are quite a few of them (and very valuable!).
#1 Podgorica, Montenegro
Montenegro may not be first on your fall travel list, but isn’t that a huge omission? Autumn vineyards are…well, amazing. If you want to tour local wine production, rent a Bugatti and head to Szipčanik’s wine cellar. Tours and tastings are also available. It’s a great escape in the best sense of the word.
Now, renting a car isn’t just useful for wine tours. You will also need it when visiting the ancient ruins of Do Clare. These are just a short drive from the city. The temperature here is usually low and the place itself is very picturesque.
Overall, Podgorica in autumn is beautiful. Local markets are full of autumn produce (a chance to sample seasonal Montenegrin cuisine!). Temperatures are mild (about 18°C or 65°F), so being outdoors is really comfortable. Accommodation prices are affordable, but of course it’s best to stay away from the city center.

2nd place Atlantic City, USA
For most travelers, Atlantic City is primarily a summer destination. This means fall has a slower pace, allowing for more comfortable exploration. This is especially true in traditionally crowded locations, such as famous boardwalks and beaches.
Another big draw to Atlantic City in the fall is that lodging is about 30% cheaper. Now, what can we do here? First of all, you can visit local seafood spots (fresh catch and ocean views). Additionally, you can explore the Marina district. It’s a little more comfortable when done in cooler weather.
If you’re visiting here in the fall, be aware that many attractions may have reduced opening hours (please check ahead of time). The boardwalk is great for biking (or walking). You probably don’t need a car here.

#3 Harrisburg, USA
Pennsylvania’s capital is especially beautiful in the fall. In addition, many fun events are held here every year. This year, for example, there will be a Cranberry and Chocolate Festival. Yes, that’s crazy and so cool. It will be held from November 22nd to November 24th. Lots of delicious food and live music.
In addition to events, riverboat rides along the Susquehanna River are a local staple. It offers a unique vantage point to view the changing autumn leaves. And of course, there’s Broad Street Market. Two must-trys here are the pumpkin whoopie pie and the spiced apple cider.

#4 Ottawa, Canada
Autumn in Ottawa has two attractions. It is a festival full of vibrant colors and vibrant autumn leaves. Regarding the latter, one of the most impressive of them is One World Bazaar. It starts in September 2017 and runs until November 2017. Then there’s the Ottawa Canadian Film Festival, Ottawa’s Magic Lights, and more. Many events are completely free.
What else should I do here? If you’re not into crowded events and activities, Ottawa is an equally cool place to bike or walk along the Rideau Canal. Yes, the gourmet scene reaches its peak in autumn. Almost all local restaurants offer seasonal menus, including classic fall dishes like maple-glazed salmon.
Like most places, hotel prices drop in the fall, making it easier to stay luxurious. The weather remains pleasant. Daytime temperatures are around 10-12°C (50-54°F), perfect for outdoor activities.

#5 Krakow, Poland
And finally, Krakow. In the fall, the city transforms into a quieter, but equally charming city. Wawel Castle is a recommended sightseeing spot. It’s much less crowded than in the summer. To relax, visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It’s a very special experience.
It still feels nice to eat outside in autumn. Local cafes and bakeries offer seasonal pastries such as the popular “pontsuki”. The latter is filled with rose jam (please with hot coffee!).
