WASHINGTON – As the busy holiday travel season approaches, a new study provides insight into who is taking vacation and who is staying home.
The Vacationer, a travel agency specializing in theme park trips, cruises and resort vacations, reports that a survey found that more than 50% of respondents plan to travel during Thanksgiving and Christmas. , it has been suggested that this holiday season will be one of the busiest.
AAA predicts that 55.4 million people will travel for Thanksgiving in 2023, and an additional 115.2 million people will travel during Christmas, the second-highest amount since 2000.
Of those planning to travel in 2024, about 22% plan to travel only for Thanksgiving, and nearly 29% plan to travel for both Thanksgiving and the Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa holidays.
The travel agency found that residents of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were most likely to take to the roads and skies, while those living in the Plains were most likely to stay at home.
Spending on travel is also expected to increase, with nearly a third of Americans planning to spend more than $1,000 on essentials such as gas, flights and hotels.
“American adults 60 and older are the least likely to spend money on Thanksgiving travel this year. 48.04% of people in this age group said they would spend $0. “The age group most likely to spend among adults is Thanksgiving travelers, Americans between the ages of 30 and 44,” Vacationer analysts said.

During the 2023 travel season, the company recorded 2,741,610 passengers on the day before Thanksgiving and 2,908,785 passengers on the following Sunday.
The actual holiday itself was the least traveled day of the year, with just 1,547,419 people passing through U.S. commercial airports.

Approximately 46% of respondents have little or no confidence that they will be able to avoid delays or cancellations this holiday season, according to the survey.
However, this number is actually down about 13% from last year’s survey, likely a result of strong airline performance and favorable travel weather in 2023.
