EASTON, Mass. (WLNE) – More than a dozen residents were evacuated after a house fire broke out in Easton this morning.
According to authorities, a total of 12 residents were evacuated and a dog and a cat died in the fire.
Easton Fire Chief Justin Alexander said crews were dispatched to 13 Columbus Avenue around 3:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy fire in the basement of the apartment, which quickly spread to the first and second floors of the three-family home.
Firefighters rescued a disabled resident in a wheelchair who lived on the first floor and was unable to escape.
All other residents of the home had been evacuated before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters said they were able to bring the fire under control within about an hour.
One cat and one dog died in the fire, and the other dog is currently being treated at a local veterinary hospital.
Twelve residents have been evacuated due to the fire and will be staying with their families.
The fire is under investigation, but the chief said it appears to have started accidentally.
